May 22, 2011 a major tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri destroying thousands of homes leaving many cats and dogs homeless or seperated from their families. The ASPCA and the Joplin Humane Society are working together to care for these displaced pets. The two societies are hosting a pet adoption event June 25-26, 2011. There will not be any adoption fees, adoptable pets will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchiped and fully evaluated by the ASPCA's animal behavior team. So far the ASPCA has provided emergency shelter for about 1,300 animals, reunited over 400 pets with their owners, prepared 600 for adoption. There are 300 others who are not ready for adoption yet that are being bored by families.
